I have loved fly fishing and fly dressing from a young age, it is hard to believe that over 40 years have elapsed since I dressed my first fly. One particularly inspiring moment in my fly dressing journey was attending my first Partridge Fly Tying Day at Bridge of Allen where I was introduced to the work of some amazing fly dressers including the late Oliver Edwards and Davy Wotton - what a revelation. I was desperate to learn more!
I joined the Aberdeen branch of the Fly Dressers Guild which proved very important in my development as a fly dresser, being a member of the club allowed me to attend many fly dressing workshops over the years hosted by fly dressers with an astonishing level of technical ability. I have been very fortunate to have received one-to-one tuition from the likes of the late Oliver Edwards, Paul Little, Marvin Nolte and Wayne Luallen. I would urge anyone looking to acquire new techniques or wanting to improve their fly dressing skills to join a club.
I am a qualified Scottish Game Angling Instructor (SGAIC) in single-handed fly casting and fly dressing, I have also been fortunate to have passed my AAPGAI Advanced Fly Dressing Assessment, a very rewarding challenge! The most valuable aspect of sitting these assessments is the very honest feedback one receives at the end of the exam. Only with an honest critique can one progress as a fly dresser, the journey of acquiring new skills and techniques required to dress flies never ends, there are always new patterns to dress, providing new challenges to overcome.
I am honoured to have been invited to the Irish Fly Fair where I will be dressing a range of Trout flies at the show. I really look forward to sharing my passion for fly dressing with you!
