Irish Fly Fair

Hi everyone!

My name is Jackie Mahon. I am a full-time fishing guide and fly tyer located on the west coast of Ireland where I guide over the season on Lough Arrow, Lough Melvin and Glencar lake. I spend my winter months tying flies for customers and topping up on my own guiding boxes.

Fly fishing has been a strong passion of mine since a very young age. I am from a family of fishermen and as they say it’s in the blood. A big part of my childhood was spent chasing wild Brown Trout and Salmon on the Garavogue river in Sligo. I caught my first brown trout on one of my own flies and I was literally hooked. The feeling I had that day catching that brown trout with a fly rod in my hand on my own fly is something I will never forget for the rest of my life. From that day on all I wanted to do was fish and tye flies.

I was blessed to be able to learn from my dad and grandfather the art of fishing, fly tying and dyeing materials which you can see in the flies that I tye. On my fly fishing journey, I represented my country on an international level and also guided and tyed the winning flies for the Irish team which helped them achieve a gold medal on Lough Melvin in June 2022.

I also design flies for Fulling Mill for the Irish and UK market. I have been asked this year to add more of my range to the collection for the 2024 season. My flies have been featured in two Trout and Salmon magazine articles and I have also written an article for the Flyfishing journal.
