‘I’ll see you at the Fly Fair’

Normally at this time of the year, I would be finishing most of my phone calls with the above line. Indeed, throughout the fishing season (pre-covid) as I would be saying farewell to clients after a day or two on the Lough, I would be uttering the same line to a lot of them.

Alas for 2020 there will be no meeting up at the Fly Fair in Salthill, there will no bone crushing hand-shakes and bear hugs, no big hearty smiles and guffaws of laughter as old friends meet up. Anglers that normally only see one another cosseted in waders or bib and brace and hooded jackets by the Lough or the River, got to meet one another bedecked in their civvies. Over the past ten years the Irish Fly Fair has become a huge event on the Fly Angler’s calendar, not only a means to stock up on some new gear or clobber or to get the last spool of the 14 Glo Brite shades that you don’t have. No, it is much more than that now, it is a huge social event for anglers to meet up at, a welcome interlude in the long close season when our aforementioned waders, bibs and braces and Jackets are packed away and a chance to dream of tight lines with old friends for the forthcoming season.

Galway band; The Stunning, in their song ‘Heads’ sang that you don’t miss the water until the well runs dry and that is very pertinent for us as we will not partake from the well this year and we will miss the Fly Fair. Our closed season will be that little bit longer this year.

As we experience the great unknown that is associated with the Corona virus, we do not know what lies ahead for us, in all walks of life. All we can do is hope and pray that a good end will come to it, sooner rather than later and that we can return to some form of reality. With these hopes we shall include that 2021 will see a resumption of Irish Fly Fair and old friends can meet again.
